Actions for improving gender equality discussed at a panel event in Nicosia buffer zone: “Equality Makes Sense”

The Embassy of Sweden, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Centre for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Development (SeeD), organized a panel discussion on Tuesday 10th May where the results of the “Equality Makes Sense” campaign were shared with gender experts, policy actors, CSOs and media representatives.

“Equality Makes Sense” is an online civic participation campaign about gender equality implemented through Pusula / Ππούσουλας Platform. The campaign ran from 31st March – 29th April, inviting people from all communities of Cyprus, to share ideas on simple, yet impactful ways to improve gender equality in personal, professional and political life. The campaign aimed to contribute to progress in gender equality by raising awareness on its importance and sensitizing people to take action for gender equality in Cyprus.

Most of the ideas shared during the campaign emphasized the need for changing societal norms through parental education and gender-sensitive school curricula. Capacity building in public speaking and leadership for young girls aged 13-15 as well as increasing paternity leave, offering free / cheap childcare to increase women participation in peacebuilding and socio-cultural events also stood out among the shared ideas.

During his opening address, Bengt Baedecke, Chargé d’affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Sweden in Cyprus, said “while most people will agree that gender equality makes sense, concrete action needs to be taken to truly remove inequalities”. Hubert Faustmann, Head of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Cyprus referred to the value of the “Equality Makes Sense” campaign by saying “on both sides of the divide there is an urgent need to improve gender equality for the sake of all Cypriots”.

At the panel discussion, LGBTI+ activist Erman Dolmacı, indicated that we need to go beyond binary understanding of gender and acknowledge the complexities of our sexuality. Fezile Osum, human rights lawyer, added that LGBT+ and women, particularly foreigners, are facing exploitation and harassment at the workplace, which requires immediate action. Women’s rights expert Josie Christodoulou stated that a strong political will is essential for removing the systemic barriers to ensuring women’s political participation. As civil society member, Andri Christofides highlighted the importance of using gender-sensitive communication and creation of safe spaces to trigger more meaningful discussions around gender equality. The event closed with an interesting discussion on the actions to be taken by all stakeholders for improving gender equality in Cyprus.
