Significant challenges remain in Cyprus regarding gender equality. Although the country has made progress, it still ranks below the EU average in the Gender Equality Index. One of the most pressing issues is the under-representation of women in political and economic leadership positions. Only 14.3% of parliamentarians in Cyprus are women, placing the country among the lowest in the EU.
Another major concern is the inadequate response to gender-based violence. Protective measures for survivors are often insufficient, especially for marginalized groups such as migrants and people of the LGBTQIA+ community.
FES Cyprus actively promotes gender equality by raising awareness and bringing the issue to the forefront of public discourse. The Foundation supports gender equality policies, highlights gender challenges in the labour market and contributes to raising awareness of discriminatory structures. It also advocates for a stronger legal framework and greater representation of women in political decision-making.
