Cyprus is located in a geopolitically dynamic region of longstanding conflict. Greece, the two parts of Cyprus and Turkey form a historical triangle of tension that continues to influence political developments. In addition, the evolving situation in the Middle East further amplifies security challenges. Meanwhile, global powers such as the United States, China, and Russia are seeking to expand their strategic influence in the region. Other factors such as migration, climate change, and increasing competition for natural resources - especially gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean - are exacerbating tensions. 

In this complex environment, Cyprus seeks to position itself as a mediator and stabilizing force to safeguard its interests. FES Cyprus actively promotes constructive dialogue and confidence-building measures among decision-makers, experts and key stakeholders. The aim is to promote a more objective security debate and to reduce hostile perceptions. This includes addressing migration, climate and foreign policy issues within a comprehensive security framework. A key element of FES Cyprus' work is the integration of a gender perspective as an essential component of a holistic security strategy.
