On the 5th of June 2018, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung was honored to co-host the event “Security Dialogue Initiative (SDI): Gender Score Cyprus Launch Event and Reception” at the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia. The Security Dialogue Project is implemented by the Centre for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Development (SeeD), together with its international partners.
SDI extensive research explicitly shows that Cypriot women are more sceptical than men in their approach to the peace process and the male leaders involved. To contribute to a more resilient sustainable and inclusive peace process the SDI team has customize the SCORE methodology to further investigate this nexus between gender, security and Peacebuilding. The pursuit to prevent the discrimination of women in the Peace and Security Agenda is also compatible with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5 and 16, Gender Equality and Peace and Justice/Strong Institutions respectively. The EU Gender Action Plan 2016-2020 has prioritized the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and with a special focus on enhancing the role of women in Peacebuilding and by supporting governments to develop ways to increase girls' and women’s participation in political life. The overall objective of the Gender SCORE Cyprus research is the enhancement of social cohesion, gender inclusivity and gender mainstreaming while contributing to the reinvigoration of the Cyprus peace process by initiating useful steps towards the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security within the framework of the SDGs 5 and 16.
The event aimed to reflect on SDI Gender SCORE research findings and why women are needed in the peace process, also linking it to international standards and frameworks such as the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal No5.
