Invitation to the Europe Calling Webinar "Hotspot Mediterranean"

Join us for the Europe Calling webinar “Hotspot Mediterranean” – an online seminar exploring migration in the Eastern Mediterranean.

While refugee numbers on other routes are declining, more people are risking the eastern Mediterranean path to Europe. Rising tensions in Lebanon and Egypt could further increase these numbers. The EU is responding with migration agreements aimed at stopping crossings to Greece and Cyprus. But what do these deals mean for refugees? And how will the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) affect the situation?

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, in collaboration with its partners—the PRIO Cyprus Centre, the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, and ELIAMEP—has conducted a comprehensive comparative analysis of these questions, drawing on studies from the respective countries. In the next Europe Calling webinar, we want to hear the results and discuss with experts what future EU migration policy should look like in light of the findings.

Our guests are:

Study authors Angeliki Dimitriadi from Greece (Until 2024 Head of the Migration Programme & Senior Research Fellow, ELIAMEP) and Amina Fahmy (Migration Policy Researcher) from Egypt

Niki Georgiou, Executive Director of the Athens office of the German-Greek human rights NGO ‘Equal Rights Beyond Borders’

Dr Raphael Bossong, Deputy Head of the EU/Europe Research Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP Berlin)
