Annual Assessment and Foresight on Mediterranean Diplomacy

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung was pleased to host Diplomeds – The Council for Mediterranean Diplomacy in Berlin for their Annual Assessment and Foresight on Mediterranean Diplomacy.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung had the pleasure of welcoming Diplomeds – The Council for Mediterranean Diplomacy to Berlin last week for their Annual Assessment and Foresight on Mediterranean Diplomacy.

The annual workshop brought together 30 former diplomats and regional experts from across the Mediterranean to reflect on key diplomatic developments in 2025 and to help inform strategic directions for 2026. Through plenary sessions, thematic working groups, and foresight exercises, participants examined trends in conflict resolution, inter-state relations, and cooperation, while identifying actionable priorities for the year ahead.

Discussions included sessions on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and its implications for Morocco–Algeria relations; on transformations in Israel–Lebanon–Syria dynamics; and on the role of external actors such as the European Union and Gulf states in shaping Mediterranean Diplomacy.

We also collaborated with Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) for a panel titled “Ending Wars, Leveraging Transitions, Advancing Cooperation: How to Fulfil New Diplomatic Opportunities in the Mediterranean?”

Our team was pleased to host this workshop and support Diplomeds in their process of reflection and forward-looking dialogue on Mediterranean diplomacy.
